Yellowknife Geoscience Forum
November 16-18, 2004

Return to Geoscience Forum Home page

The 32nd annual Yellowknife Geoscience Forum was held November 16-18, 2004 and was attended by a record-breaking 697 delegates. The Forum consists of a trade show, held at the Explorer Hotel, and a series of technical sessions at the Capitol Theatre. The trade show featured displays and information on businesses and agencies associated with resource development industries including mining and exploration companies, support industries (charter aircraft, expeditors, etc.), analytical and technical support services, a number of review boards, as well as government departments and programs.

The technical program consisted of eight thematic speakers’ sessions and a poster session. This portion of the Forum is coordinated every year by staff at NTGO (with some help from colleagues in Nunavut and other agencies in Yellowknife) who organize session chairs and presenters, collect and compile abstracts from authors, schedule talks, and ensure that everything runs smoothly once the lights go down in the theatres on the first morning. In addition to this organizational role, nearly all NTGO staff presented talks and/or posters on results of their current projects and/or information services.

A wide range of topics were covered in the 2004 technical sessions (Abstracts Volume); including updates on current petroleum, diamond and metals exploration activities across NWT and Nunavut, presentations on environmental and regulatory issues, and talks on current geoscience research by government and academic institutions. A session on digital data/geomatics provided updates on new developments in information management and services, such as web applications, remote sensing, and digital data management tools. Below are zip files containing the PowerPoint presentations of some of the talks given in this session. Please click on the name of the file to download it to your computer.

A new session was introduced this year on geoscience outreach. It focused on initiatives that provide geoscience information to non-traditional (i.e. non-industry) users, and included information on prospector training programs in the NWT and Nunavut, as well as NTGO’s range of community outreach and geoscience education programs.

The Geoscience Forum takes a lot of energy, commitment, and dedication to pull off successfully each year. Thank you very much to everyone who helped out! Join us for next year's Yellowknife Geoscience Forum on November 15-17, 2005.

For general information on the Forum, visit the NWT and Nunavut Chamber of Mines web site or contact Cheryl Wourms (Office Manager).
