NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCE ASSESSMENTS

Non-renewable resource assessments (NRAs) are informed evaluations of mineral and petroleum potential based on the best geoscientific information available. The Northwest Territories Geoscience Office (NTGO) has undertaken NRAs, and more general resource assessments as part of the NWT Protected Areas Strategy (PAS), in support of land claims and land use plans. The status of current NRAs is outlined below. During 2008 phase 1 Mineral Resource Assessments were completed for Sambaa K’e (Trout Lake) and Pehdzeh Ki Ndeh (Wrigley) and both will be available early in 2009. Phase 2 reports for Sambaa K’e and Ts’ ude niline Tu’ eyeta (Ramparts River and Wetlands) will also be completed during 2009.

Edéhzhíe (Horn Plateau)

In collaboration with the Geological Survey of Canada’s National Geochemical Reconnaissance Program (NGR), the NTGO completed a stream sediment sampling program across the entire 25,233 km2 area of the Edehzhie candidate area. In total, 602 water samples, 606 silt samples and 325 bulk stream sediment samples were collected and analysed. Results were released as GSC Open File 5478 in October 2007. The Phase 2 NRA was completed and released on April 1, 2008. The main findings outlined in this report include moderate potential for zinc-lead deposits along the southern escarpment of the Horn Plateau and to the northwest of the Plateau and moderate to high diamond potential across the Edehzhie area. Results of this work will contribute to the decision making process on boundary locations for the protected area.

Ts’ ude niline Tu’ eyeta (Ramparts River and Wetlands)

A regional stream sediment sampling program was initiated in 2007 by the NTGO in collaboration with the NGR. A total of 404 silt samples, 404 water samples, and 214 bulk stream sediment samples were collected from the Ts’ ude niline Tu’ eyeta area in 2007. Further fieldwork in 2008 included completion of stream sediment survey across the remainder of the southern, mountainous part of Ts’ ude niline Tu’ eyeta and the collection of 88 till samples along stream banks and in non permafrost areas in the northern wetlands part of the candidate protected area. The Phase 2 NRA for minerals is awaiting the remainder of the analytical results (geochemistry and Heavy Mineral studies including KIMs). Result will be documented in the Phase 2 report which will be published later in 2009.

Sambaa K’e (Trout Lake)

Phase 2 fieldwork was carried out in the summer of 2008 by Toon Pronk and two consultants as well as Jessica Jumbo of the Trout Lake community. 170 bulk till samples @ 30kg each and 3 bulk stream sediment samples, were collected in the Sambaa K’e area and are being analyzed for geochemistry and Heavy Minerals (including KIMs). Results will be evaluated and a report will be published later in 2009.

Plans for 2009

Phase 1 work for SGN (Tulita Mtn Area) will be completed before Phase 2 field work will commence during the summer of 2009. The Wrigley Lake map area will be sampled with stream sediments and water as well as bulk stream sediments. Field work will also take place for the Ka’a’gee Tu (Kakisa Lake) area. This area does not lend itself to a stream survey because of the generally low relief, instead a bulk till sampling survey similar to the Sambaa K’e will be carried out. The NTGO will also publish a phase 1 NRA for the Upper Thelon area that was commissioned to Aurora Geosciences. The report is currently under review.
