Data and Services

NT GoMap

NT GoMap is the NWT Geoscience Office’s (NTGO) online mapping tool that enables users to discover, search, display and download information from its large collection of GIS (Geographic Information System) data and geoscience-related publications. It is an interactive web-based geology portal that can be used to create custom maps and query subsets of data determined by the user.

The information includes mineral showings, exploration reports, petroleum industry reports and, digitally submitted geophysical and geochemical data, and diamond/kimberlite sample data. Our data is collected and compiled from field observations, research, analysis, and organized into themed collections within NT GoMap.

Users can perform complex queries – the combination of spatial and geoscience query options provide excellent search capabilities to meet the diverse needs of NTGO’s clients. For example, users can locate and download all Showings or References that are within a geological province or are within 100 kilometres of a community.

The powerful web application allows users to create custom formatted maps, which once completed, can be printed, emailed or downloaded as a formatted graphic or text file. Users will be able to access an extensive amount of data and information and use NT GoMap to create maps and files that meet their own unique needs.

NT GoMap is tightly integrated with Gateway, allowing users to query and download publications derived from spatial or geographic constraints.

Gateway: Browsing Our Digital Collection

Our Gateway application allows users to browse through and download for free or order scanned mineral exploration assessment reports, scanned petroleum reports (well history reports, and geological and geophysical reports), and digital versions of our publications. Other references to geology and exploration in the NWT can be discovered through the References button in NT GoMap. A shopping cart can be used to store individual files from within reports, to select multiple files or reports for download, or to order selections too large to download. You can go back to your cart days or weeks later to download or order what you saved there. Click here for more information about these features.

Database of Mineral Showings

The NTGO maintains a database of mineral showings in the NWT - the NORMIN Showings database. Specific showings or groups of showings can be selected from this database with the aid of NT GoMap, offering a variety of reports on the selected mineral showings. Showings are represented as point locations in NT GoMap.

Database of References

NTGO maintains a database of information about literature and unpublished references to geology and mineral exploration in the NWT. This is the NORMIN Reference database, searchable through our NT GoMap online appplication. Items described within it include NWT Geoscience Office publications, mineral exploration assessment reports, journal articles, university theses, and publications of scientific associations. Items which are distributed by NTGO can be downloaded directly from Gateway. Click here for instructions on how to use these features in Gateway.

Archived Assessment Reports

The Office also houses an Archive containing over 4000 mineral exploration Assessment Reports for the NWT, dating from the 1940's to present. These assessment files are stored in a secure room but are available for viewing upon request. Reports of interest can be selected with the aid of NT GoMap. NWT assessment reports have been scanned and are available for download or ordering through Gateway or NT GoMap.

Raw geophysical and other data submitted by industry in digital format, as well as digitized compilations of kimberlite indicator data, are also available through Gateway.

Rock Samples and Diamond Drill Core

NTGO has a large collection of rock samples and diamond drill core in its care. Clients may view these samples and, if approved, take sub-samples for analysis. Drill core of interest can be selected with the aid of a digital catalogue and interactive map (published as NWT Open Report 2003-003). Contact ntgo@gov.nt.ca.

Standards Development

The Office actively supports development of national geoscience data standards by Canadian Geoscience Knowledge Network (CGKN) working groups.
