Special Session 10 - Northeast Canada and Greenland: Geology, correlations, and resource potential

Donald T. James (Canada - Nunavut Geoscience Office) and Henrik Stendal (Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS))

Sponsored by C-NGO and the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland

In the International Polar Year, this GAC Special Session will be a celebration of northern geoscience in Canada and Greenland. In particular, this session will focus on the geologic similarities, the geology of contiguous offshore areas, and Archean to Cenozoic tectonic models for the two regions, with the objective of improving correlations across the Labrador Sea and Davis Strait. The session will also investigate the similarities in metallogenic provinces and hydrocarbon environments in both regions. A greater understanding of the resource potential is essential as mining and energy companies progressively explore polar frontiers. Sustainable extraction of these resources will be increasingly important for the economies of Canada and Greenland, and for the benefit of people living in the North.
