Special Session 8 - Advances In Kimberlite Geology And Diamond Genesis

Hamish Sandeman (NTGO) and Thomas Stachel (University of Alberta)

1.5 days Oral and Poster

Sponsored by Mineral Deposits Division

Following the discovery of diamondiferous kimberlite in the Northwest Territories at Point Lake in 1991, Canada has fast become a key player in the global diamond community. A rapid and sustained increase in diamond exploration and mining in Canada's North has since led to an explosion of new information. This session is dedicated to a broad range of topics pertaining to diamonds and kimberlites including (i) innovations in diamond exploration techniques and latest results; (ii) advances in kimberlite volcanology, petrology, and geochronology; (iii) studies on mantle xenoliths and inclusions in diamonds: new insights into the evolution of the subcratonic lithospheric mantle and its diamond sources.
