The Snare River area is in the southwestern Slave Province, about 150 km northwest of Yellowknife, NT. Systematic 1:50 000 scale geological mapping of the Snare River area began in 1998 and was completed in 2002, covering ~seven 1:50 000 map sheets. Results from each field season of mapping were released as 1:50 000 scale Open Files (EGS Open Files 1998-18, 1998-19, 2000-08, and 2000-10 and NWT Open File 2002-02). In 2003, the preliminary compilation map (shown schematically below) was released as NWT Open Report 2003-002. All of these maps are available as Adobe Acrobat .pdf files or in hard copy, and may be ordered here. The final compilation for the Snare River mapping project has been released as a digital geological atlas (Jackson, V.A., Bennet, V., and Irwin D., 2006. An Arcview 3.x Digital Geological Atlas of the Snare River area, parts of NTS 85O and 85N; Northwest Territories Geoscience Office, NWTÂ Open File 2006-06. Digital Files).

The heart of the Snare River Digital Atlas is the geologic map, which has been converted from AutoCAD R14 into ArcView 3.x. The original FieldLog 3.0 databases, imported into ArcView 3.x format, form the backbone of a relational database of the field data. The geologic map incorporates the following primary layers, as polygon, line and point data: bedrock lithology, surficial deposits, structure, samples, and station and traverse locations. The Snare River Digital Atlas incorporates additional data such as:
petrographic, geochemical and geochronological analytical results;
publicly available airborne magnetic surveys;
selected photographs, such as aerial and outcrop photographs and photomicrographs;
cross-sections and figures;
reference to a number of related reports and thesis studies, and;
descriptive text.
