It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Stephen Goff, District Geologist with the Northwest Territories Geoscience Office in Yellowknife. Steve died unexpectedly but peacefully at home on Saturday August 1, 2009. He is survived by his wife Moira Cameron.
Steve possessed a tremendous wealth of knowledge on the geology of the NWT and Nunavut acquired over more than 30 years. His Ph.D. study on the magmatic and metamorphic history of the East Arm of Great Slave Lake was completed in 1984 at the University of Alberta. In addition to his long association with Indian and Northern Affairs Canada in Yellowknife, Steve also worked briefly for Mattagami Lake Mines Ltd. and as an Assistant Professor at Laurentian University in Sudbury.
Steve was an accomplished musician, storyteller, photographer, and writer. He will be greatly missed by the entire Yellowknife community.
An informal evening of music, stories, and memories in celebration of Steve’s life is scheduled for Thursday, August 13, starting at 5:00 pm at the Old Town Landing building in Yellowknife. This is a potluck event. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated. In memoriam donations can be made through their website.
