Bedrock Mapping

In foreground is male geologist walking toward us with head down, hat on, hammer dangling from hand, pack on back, \"surveyor's\" vest. Ground drops away behind him to braided river far below, dark mountains of subvertical strata beyond river. The Northwest Territories (NWT) contains a variety of bedrock types that formed from 50 million years to over 4 billion years ago and includes the oldest rocks on Earth. Geological maps showing the distribution of these rock types are produced by the Northwest Territories Geological Survey (NTGS). These maps form the basis for future exploration for mineral and petroleum resources, scientific studies, and land use making decisions. Bedrock mapping involves recording the characteristics of rocks that are exposed on the land, mainly by walking over them and breaking them open with a rock hammer. Bedrock mapping can be combined with geophysical and remote sensing techniques. The NTGS conducts bedrock mapping at a variety of scales and in a variety of areas within the NWT. Our recent bedrock mapping projects are focused in the Cordillera and in the Rae and Bear Structural Provinces of the Canadian Shield.
